VTP and HSRP config on two core switches

hello Experts,

Please help me regarding VTP Server config on 3560E.

I have configure multiple vlans on both the core swithces below is the example, my question is how will be my VTP server configuration on the 3560E since both the core switches will have identical vlans HSRP 2 configured on them.

Do I have to configure both the cores with same DOMAIN NAME ?

The core has VTP 2 so I cannot use primary and secondary option.

CoreSwitch1

interface Vlan713

ip address 194.43.86.251 255.255.255.0

standby version 2

standby 86 ip 194.43.86.1

!

interface Vlan714

ip address 194.43.87.251 255.255.255.0

standby version 2

standby 87 ip 194.43.87.1

standby 87 priority 150

standby 87 preempt

CoreSwitch 2

interface Vlan713

ip address 194.43.86.252 255.255.255.0

standby version 2

standby 86 ip 194.43.86.1

standby 86 priority 150

standby 86 preempt

!

Hello Deepak,

>> Do I have to configure both the cores with same DOMAIN NAME ?

yes indeed,  if you want them to be part of the same VTP domain. It is good practice to have at least two VTP servers in a VTP domain for redundancy.

It is not a problem to have two VTP servers in the same VTP domain.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

hi Giuseppe

Thanks for your quick reply

What I ment was

If I configure both the core switches with same domain name for the VTP server, will it clash ? and who will be the primary server for all my clients.

Secondly I configured the vtp as shown below it works perfectly fine

CORE 1

VTP Version                     : 2

Configuration Revision          : 11

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005

Number of existing VLANs        : 9

VTP Operating Mode              : Server

VTP Domain Name                 : SERVER

VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled

VTP V2 Mode                     : Enabled

VTP Traps Generation            : Enabled

MD5 digest                      : 0xD1 0x5D 0x72 0xBB 0x44 0xC5 0xE8 0xEE

Configuration last modified by 0.0.0.0 at 3-1-93 00:27:52

Local updater ID is 194.43.86.251 on interface Vl713 (lowest numbered VLAN inter

face found)

CORE2

TP Version                     : 2

Configuration Revision          : 11

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 1005

Number of existing VLANs        : 9

VTP Operating Mode              : Server

VTP Domain Name                 : SERVER

VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled

VTP V2 Mode                     : Enabled

VTP Traps Generation            : Enabled

MD5 digest                      : 0xD1 0x5D 0x72 0xBB 0x44 0xC5 0xE8 0xEE

Configuration last modified by 0.0.0.0 at 3-1-93 00:27:52

Local updater ID is 194.43.86.252 on interface Vl713 (lowest numbered VLAN inter

face found)

however i also get error "Mar  1 02:54:04.666: %CDP-4-NATIVE_VLAN_MISMATCH: Native VLAN mismatch discover

ed on GigabitEthernet1/0/4 (713), with CORE2 GigabitEthernet0/46 (1)"

Regards

Deepak

Yes it is always recommended to have 2 Servers i same vtp domain.  If one goes down other must respeond to clients.

I will recommend putting a md5 vtp password on your domain in case of rogue switches can do something wrong.

I have just had a problem:

2 core switches, 1 server, 1 client.

When I configured HSRP on both switches, duplicate IP log showed up.

the post was 10 years back and you can refer the same port and open a new thread

and providing your environment information model of device and ios code, and sample config of HSRP and show log of both the devices of HSRP config ?

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/ip/hot-standby-router-protocol-hsrp/10583-62.html

depends on the code using - may be bug
