I am upgrading a Cisco 6506E VSS from 12.2(33)SXI5 to 12.2(33)SXJ5 during a maintenance window. So I have plenty of time to reboot the VSS. Can anyone confirm if below is the correct procedure. I have manually copied the new IOS to both active and standby Sup720s.
no boot system
boot system flash sup-bootdisk:NEW_IOS.bin
boot system flash sup-bootdisk:OLD_IOS.bin
!
copy run start
reload
I was going through the below cisco document and there are a few more steps as below: Is it necessary?
Router(config)# no boot system
Router(config)# config-register 0x2102
Router(config)# boot system flash disk0:image_name
Router(config)# end
Router# copy running-config startup-config
Router# redundancy reload peer
Router# redundancy force-switchover

You procedure is correct. You don't need the extra steps since you are rebooting both switches at the same time.
The reboot for both chassis takes about 8 Minutes (depending on the number of cards you have in both chassis).
Good Luck

Hi PJPJ,
As Reza said it is perfect procedure. Go ahead with the procedure.
VSS(config)# no boot system
VSS(config)# boot system flash
VSS# copy run start
VSS# redundancy reload peer
++ This command will reload the standby supervisor and it will come up as standby cold
with the new image.
VSS# show redundancy
VSS# redundancy force-switchover
This will reload the active chassis and standby will take over.
Confirm the correct IOS is loaded
